Institution PublicationA Characterization for Generalized Hukuhara Differentiable Interval-Valued Functions and Some Rules of Calculus( 2022-01-01)
;Blanche-Alcócer J.C.Chalco-Cano Y.In this article we show a characterization for a gH-differentiable interval-valued function through of properties of the (lateral) differentiability of its length function. Then, we give a procedure to classify a gH-differentiable interval-valued function according to their four types of gH-differentiability. Furthermore, using this classification, we propose a procedure to determine the points at which the sum of two gH-differentiable functions is gH-differentiable as well as to determine their type of gH-differentiability. -
Institution PublicationA Comparison of Machine Learning Classifiers for Water-Body Segmentation Task in the PeruSAT-1 Imagery( 2021-01-01)
;Huauya R. ;Moreno F. ;Peña J. ;Dianderas E. ;Mauricio A.Díaz J.Water-body segmentation is a high-relevance task inside satellite image analysis due to its relationship with environmental monitoring and assessment. Thereon, several authors have proposed different approaches which achieve a wide range of results depending on their datasets and settings. This study is a brief review of classical segmentation techniques in multispectral images using the Peruvian satellite PeruSAT-1 imagery. The areas of interest are medium-sized highland zones with water bodies around in Peruvian south. We aim to analyze classical segmentation methods to prevent future natural disasters, like alluviums or droughts, under low-cost data constraints. We consider accuracy, robustness, conditions, and visual effects in our analysis. -
Institution PublicationA Feature Extraction Method Based on Convolutional Autoencoder for Plant Leaves Classification( 2019-01-01)
;Paco Ramos M.M. ;Paco Ramos V.M. ;Fabian A.L.Osco Mamani E.F.In this research, we present an approach based on Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for leaves classification of different trees. While previous approaches relied on image processing and manual feature extraction, the proposed approach operates directly on the image pixels, without any preprocessing. Firstly, we use multiple layers of CAE to learn the features of leaf image dataset. Secondly, the extracted features were used to train a linear classifier based on SVM. Experimental results show that the classifiers using these features can improve their predictive value, reaching an accuracy rate of 94.74%. -
Institution PublicationA Human-in-The-Loop Context-Aware System Allowing the Application of Case-Based Reasoning for Asthma Management( 2019-01-01)
;Quinde M. ;Khan N. ;Augusto J.van Wyk A.Determining the asthma health status of a person is a relevant task in the application of context-awareness and case-based reasoning for asthma management. As there are no devices that can track the asthma health status of a person constantly, it is necessary to use a Human-in-The-Loop (HiTL) approach for creating a solution able to associate their health status with context-related data. This research work proposes a system that implements the Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) for determining the asthma health status of a person. The system links this health status to context-related data the person is exposed, and creates the cases to be used by the CBR component of the system. The system is then evaluated by users from a usability perspective through the Health IT Usability Evaluation Model (Health-ITUEM). -
Institution PublicationA New Learnheuristic: Binary SARSA - Sine Cosine Algorithm (BS-SCA)( 2022-01-01)
;Becerra-Rozas M. ;Lemus-Romani J. ;Crawford B. ;Soto R. ;Cisternas-Caneo F. ;Embry A.T. ;Molina M.A. ;Tapia D. ;Castillo M.Rubio J.M.This paper proposes a novel learnheuristic called Binary SARSA - Sine Cosine Algorithm (BS-SCA) for solving combinatorial problems. The BS-SCA is a binary version of Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) using SARSA to select a binarization operator. This operator is required due SCA was created to work in continuous domains. The performance of BS-SCA is benchmarked with a Q-learning version of the learnheuristic. The problem tested was the Set Covering Problem and the results show the superiority of our proposal. -
Institution PublicationA new segmentation approach in structured self-organizing maps for image retrieval( 2009-12-01)
;Patiño-Escarcina R.Costa J.Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is the problem of searching for digital images in large databases. In order to search and index the images, different models of Self-organizing Maps (SOM), such as the Tree-Structured self labeled self-organizing maps (TS-SL-SOM), were used because combines features of data quantization and topology preservation with good results. TS-SL-SOM has a dynamic and data-driven tree topology with maps as nodes. From top to down, maps are segmented and each labeled region generates a new child map in the next level. For image retrieval, the feature vectors of images were mapped into the TS-SL-SOM neural network. Although it has presented good results when applied for indexing images, in comparison with other structures. In this paper a new SOM segmentation is proposed for improving the results in CBIR. The proposed algorithm is based in the well known idea that in the edges of segments the activation of neurons is less than in the center of segments. Better retrieval results were accomplished when using the proposed method in comparison with the traditional method. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg. -
Institution PublicationA parallel algorithm for 3D reconstruction of angiographic images( 1999-01-01)
;Rivas R. ;Ibàñez M.B. ;Cardinale Y.Windyga P.Accurate diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation of coronary dysfunction is possible by tri-dimensional (3D) visualization of Coronary arteries. Reconstruction based on bi-dimensional (2D) images can be presented as a discrete optimization problem. A blind search cannot be applied, instead a Branch-and-Bound algorithm is used to explore the state space and give an intermediate result. The heuristic information used is based on knowledge based filtering in coronagraphy. A sequential algorithm using suitable filters leads to implementations where the execution time is measured in days. In order to minimize the execution time we propose to apply parallel computing techniques. The critical issue in parallel search algorithms is the distribution of the search space among the processors. We propose a technique to compute the total amount of work units among the processors. The technique is based on the enlargement of segments (unitary threads) representing pieces of arteries. We achieve a good load balancing and the speedup obtained is nearly optimum. -
Institution PublicationA Percentile Transition Ranking Algorithm Applied to Knapsack Problem( 2018-01-01)
;García J. ;Crawford B. ;Soto R.Astorga G.The binarization of Swarm Intelligence continuous metaheuristics is an area of great interest in operational research. This interest is mainly due to the application of binarized metaheuristics to combinatorial problems. In this article we propose a general binarization algorithm called Percentile Transition Ranking Algorithm (PTRA). PTRA uses the percentile concept as a binarization mechanism. In particular we will apply this mechanism to the Cuckoo Search metaheuristic to solve the set multidimensional Knapsack problem (MKP). We provide necessary experiments to investigate the role of key ingredients of the algorithm. Finally to demonstrate the efficiency of our proposal, we solve Knapsack benchmark instances of the literature. These instances show PTRA competes with the state-of-the-art algorithms. -
Institution PublicationA Powerful Tool Based on Finite Element Method for Designing Photonic Crystal Devices( 2004-01-01)
;Cerqueira A. ;Nobrega K.Z. ;Di Pasquale F.Hernandez-Figueroa H.E.Photonic crystal devices have been regarded as the key solution for overcoming the limitations of conventional optical devices. In recent years, their novel and unique features have been investigated and exploited by many researches. This work presents a powerful design tool based on Finite Element Method, FEM, to be applied in the design and optimization of these devices, such as Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) and integrated optical waveguides with photonic crystals. The full vectorial FEM code which has been implemented can be used for accurate modal and dispersion analysis. Some examples are presented concerning a novel approach for designing large-mode-area endlessly single-mode PCF and optical waveguides with photonic crystals with reduced critical power of the optical bistability phenomenon. © Springer-Verlag 2004. -

;Falconi F. ;Zapata C. ;Moquillaza A.Paz F.Automatic Telle Machine or ATM remains one of the most used banking channels and have been transformed into complex machines, where multiple operations can be carried out, not just cash withdrawals as was at the beginning. In this context, the usability and security of interfaces become essential aspects for users to interact with ATM interfaces efficiently. About usability, several studies support its important on the user experience, which also applies to the ATM domain. About security, previous works manifest its importance especially in the ATM domain. In this sense, it is intended to utilize usability and security metrics that allow establishing the degree of usability or security of ATM interfaces. In order to identify whether there are already metrics that may be valid for evaluating ATM interfaces, the authors present a systematic literature review they made about metrics that assess usability and security in banking software. After executing the review, five relevant documents were obtained. Of these, the most significant contribution is that of 160 metrics divided into 13 categories of metrics to assess the security and usability of an Internet Banking. Future research will be focused on evaluating the relevance of these proposals in the ATM domain. -

The main goal of this study is to determine the factors that influence the intention to use ERP systems, employing the model UTAUT (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) as a theoretical base. Also the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with a sample of 121 end users was used to validate the proposed extended model. The results show that the intended use of ERP systems was significantly influenced by training in problem solving and adaptation to local government regulation, in that order of importance. -
Institution PublicationAmbidextrous Socio-Cultural Algorithms( 2020-01-01)
;Lemus-Romani J. ;Crawford B. ;Soto R. ;Astorga G. ;Misra S. ;Crawford K. ;Foschino G. ;Salas-Fernández A.Paredes F.Metaheuristics are a class of algorithms with some intelligence and self-learning capabilities to find solutions to difficult combinatorial problems. Although the promised solutions are not necessarily globally optimal, they are computationally economical. In general, these types of algorithms have been created by imitating intelligent processes and behaviors observed in nature, sociology, psychology and other disciplines. Metaheuristic-based search and optimization is currently widely used for decision making and problem solving in different contexts. The inspiration for metaheuristic algorithms are mainly based on nature’s behaviour or biological behaviour. Designing a good metaheurisitcs is making a proper trade-off between two forces: Exploration and exploitation. It is one of the most basic dilemmas that both individuals and organizations constantly are facing. But there is a little researched branch, which corresponds to the techniques based on the social behavior of people or communities, which are called Social-inspired. In this paper we explain and compare two socio-inspired metaheuristics solving a benchmark combinatorial problem. -
Institution PublicationAmmonium and nitrate concentration in the soil using two nitrogen sources in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L) in the Peruvian coast( 2020-12-17)
;León D. ;Casas A. ;Riojas R.Llanos J.Ammonium and nitrate concentration in the soil were determined at 0-30, 30-60, and 60-90 cm after using two sources of nitrogen fertilizers: Cote N (4) and stabilized ammonium nitrate (SAN). Cote N (4) is a controlled release fertilizer that releases N within four months. Both fertilizers Cote N (4) and SAN were applied in an asparagus plantation with furrow irrigation. Nitrogen rate for the Cote N (4) treatment was 105.3 kg ha-1 and for the SAN treatment was 230 kg ha-1. Cote N (4) was applied at the beginning of the crop, before the first irrigation, and SAN was split in five fractions, each fraction coinciding with one furrow irrigation. Results of soil nitrate concentration showed that nitrate from SAN might pose a pollution threat for subsurface water or at least it might be lost by runoff to places where N application is not intended. Tissue N concentration was determined in phylloclades showing that there should be found other ways to assess whether proper nitrogen (N) nutrition has been achieved in asparagus. The yields of the experiment suggest that to assess the efficiency of a N fertilizer it should be applied a minimum N requirement to target the expected yield and the soil N supply should be also considered. -
Institution PublicationAn algorithm based on the bacterial swarm and its application in autonomous navigation problems( 2018-01-01)
;Martínez F. ;Rendón A.Arbulú M.Path planning is a very important problem in robotics, especially in the development of Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs). These problems are usually formulated as search problems, so many search algorithms with a high level of intelligence are evaluated to solve them. We propose a navigation algorithm based on bacterial swarming from a simplified model of bacterium that promises simple designs both at the system level and at the agent level. The most important feature of the algorithm is the inclusion of bacterial Quorum Sensing (QS), which reduces the convergence time, which is the major disadvantage of the scheme. The results in both simulation and real prototypes show not only stability but higher performance in convergence speed, showing that the strategy is feasible and valid for decentralized autonomous navigation. -

;Escobar E. ;Abramonte R. ;Aliaga A.Gutierrez F.In this work, the AutonomousSystems4D package is presented, which allows the qualitative analysis of non-linear differential equation systems in four dimensions, as well as drawing the phase surfaces by immersing R4 in R3. The package is programmed in the computational tool Octave. As a case study applied to the new Lorenz 4D System, sensitivity was found in the initial conditions, Lyapunov exponents, Kaplan Yorke dimension, a stable and unstable critical point, limit cycle, Hopf bifurcation, and hyperattractors. The package could be adapted to perform qualitative analysis and visualize phase surfaces to autonomous systems, e.g. Sprott 4D, Rossler 4D, etc. The package can be applied to problems such as: design, analysis, implementation of electronic circuits; to message encryption. -
Institution PublicationAnalysis of binding residues between PDGF-BB and epidermal growth factor receptor: A computational docking study( 2014-01-01)
;Cabezas R. ;Torrente D. ;Avila M. ;González J.Barreto G.A directed docking was performed using Cluspro between human PDGF-BB and EGFR using specific templates obtained from PDB. Various conserved residues were found to be involved in the docking interaction of the complex by means of hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds. An electrostatic potential evaluation of the PDGF-BB-EGFR complex was also performed to validate if the complex is electrostatically complementary in the binding area. Results suggested a possible binding mechanism which could explain the in vivo evidence of formation of heterodimeric receptors EGFR-PDGFR. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014. -
Institution PublicationAnalytical breeding( 2003-08-31)Ortiz R.Ploidy manipulations consist on scaling up and down chromosome numbers of a species within a polyploid series. Chromosome sets are manipulated with haploids, 2n gametes, and through interspecific-interploidy crosses. Analytical breeding schemes rely mainly on ploidy manipulations to "capture" diversity from exotic (wild or non-adapted germplasm) and use 2n gametes to incorporate this genetic diversity through unilateral (USP; n × 2n or 2n × n) or bilateral (BSP; 2n × 2n) polyploidization. Most interesting examples of analytical breeding in crop improvement are in vegetatively propagated species such as potato, sweetpotato, cassava, among roots and tubers, and plantain/banana among fruit crops. This breeding approach appears promising in blackberry, blueberry, strawberry and other fruits. An evolutionary crop breeding method was developed for further improvement of the plantain genome. This method ensued from the genetic knowledge accumulated during the analytical breeding of this triploid (3x) crop. Heterozygous 3x landraces are crossed with diploid (2x) wild or cultivated accessions showing the desired characteristic(s). Primary tetraploid (4x) hybrids are recovered after USP, i.e., 2n eggs from 3x × n pollen from 2x. Secondary triploids result by crossing selected 4x with selected 2x stocks, both producing n gametes. Triploid Musa hybrids may also occur due to USP among 2x, i.e., one 2x producing 2n gametes. Hybrids may result from artificial hand-pollination or through polycrosses among selected 4x and 2x parents according to their specific combining ability. Synthetic populations derived from the polycrosses may be tested in other locations to identify promising offspring for cultivar selection. Local selections may lead to dynamic conservation of genetic resources because farmers will preserve distinct locally adapted, improved genotypes across environments. Analytical breeding, coupled with this evolutionary breeding approach, offers an option for broadening the genetic base of fruit crops, enhancing their adaptation, and sustaining breeding gains in respective gene pools.

The survey was used as a technique and as an instrument a 20 items questionnaire, built from the theoretical framework, validated by experts and with an acceptable reliability by Cronbach's alpha statistic equal to 0.720, in a pilot test, to be applied through of a pretest and a posttest. It was concluded in the identification of a positive influence of the use of OnViolet for the improvement of the habits of skin care of the people, obtaining in the Chi-square test of Pearson, the items with 0.0, less than 0.05 of significance: use protection against UV radiation; knowledge of the maximum time of exposure to the sun without protection; knowledge of the accepted UV radiation index for unprotected exposure; use of means for the care and protection of the skin against UV radiation; knowledge of applications that report on the levels of UV radiation and recommendations on skin care; and visit the dermatologist to receive recommendations on skin care against solar radiation. -
Institution PublicationApplication of PMBOK to improve the deadline of projects in SMEs engineering consultancies( 2019-01-01)
;Hinostroza M. ;Chavez P. ;Nuñez V.Raymundo C.In recent years, project management in consulting firms has grown due to greater demands for goods and services. However, this growth has meant that due to inefficiencies in the management, delays in project delivery times are generated. In addition, the same situation occurs for performance of personnel’s competences, as well as in defining the scope of the project. Therefore, this article proposes a model for the application of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) based on knowledge management, which consists of the following areas: stakeholder management, risk management, cost management, time management, human resources management, quality management, integration management, and scope management. To show the ease of use of this model, a case study was conducted in an engineering consulting firm. The results of the application of the model were successful: the delay in project delivery times was reduced by 70% and the risks that may exist during execution were reduced by 67%. In addition, the company highlighted the success of the application of knowledge management because it improved the interaction and skills of staff by facilitating the implementation of the model.
